CUPE Job Action

Notice from School Board regarding job action by CUPE
Posted on 10/01/2019

Dear Families,

On September 25, 2019, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) announced that they would begin strike action across Ontario on September 30. This means that CUPE members in the Limestone District School Board— custodians, maintenance staff, office administrators, clerical staff, early childhood educators, educational assistants, and information technology technicians—will be engaged in strike action as of Monday.

Student safety is our priority at all times. The Board and school administrators (principals and vice-principals) are working to ensure the safety, supervision and continued learning of our students during this strike action.

We have met with local union representatives to seek further clarification about the impact of this action in our schools. Principals will be monitoring the situation in their schools and will take action if and when student safety is an issue.

Bargaining between CUPE and the Ontario government will resume this weekend. We are closely monitoring negotiations and hope all parties can reach fair, mutually agreeable agreements as quickly as possible.

The Board values the work of all of its employees and their commitment to student learning and well-being. Student achievement and well-being remain our top priority and the Board will not compromise student safety or security.

We appreciate that timely communication is important, and we commit to providing our school communities with additional details on any job action as soon as we can. Updates will be provided via regular school and Board communication channels. Look for the Labour Update on the LDSB website home page.
